MIT again earns top marks for engineering from U.S. News & World Report

MIT’s engineering program continues to top the U.S. News & World Report list of undergraduate engineering programs at a doctoral institution.

In the publication’s 2019 list, MIT also placed first in five out of 12 engineering disciplines, including electrical/electronic/communication engineering. No other institution is No. 1 in more than one discipline.

Among those specialty areas, MIT also placed first in aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering; chemical engineering; materials engineering; and mechanical engineering. The Institute placed second in computer engineering, after Carnegie Mellon University, and in biomedical engineering, after Johns Hopkins University.

Other schools in the top five overall for undergraduate engineering programs are Stanford University, Berkeley, Caltech, and Georgia Tech.

Overall, U.S. News and World Report placed MIT third in its annual rankings of the nation’s best colleges and universities, following Princeton University (No. 1) and Harvard University (No. 2).  The Institute has moved up from the No. 5 spot it occupied last year. Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Yale University also share the No. 3 ranking.

MIT ranks as the third most innovative university in the nation, according to the U.S. News peer assessment survey of top academics. The Institute is also third on the magazine’s list of national universities that offer students the best value, based on the school’s ranking and the net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid, and other variables.
