The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is launching a novel postdoctoral fellowship program, funded by Professor of Electrical Engineering Jae Lim. The first initiative of its kind within the department, the Distinguished Postdoc Fellowship Program would help to support postdoctoral scholars, with a focus on those within the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). While full criteria for eligibility have yet to be announced, the program will soon launch an explanatory website, with the first class of fellows anticipated in the fall of 2022.
“Prestigious postdoctoral fellowships are becoming increasingly important in the training of future faculty,” said Joel Voldman, faculty head of Electrical Engineering and the Clarence J. Lebel Professor of EE. ““Prestigious postdoctoral fellowships are becoming increasingly important in the training of future faculty. This new EE postdoctoral fellowship program will provide an opportunity for the best young trainees—including those from groups traditionally underrepresented in engineering—to develop an independent research program and increase their impact to the academy, the discipline, and society.” Professor Marc Baldo, the Director of RLE, added, “The Research Laboratory of Electronics is grateful to Prof. Jae Lim for his continued generosity to our research mission, as well as the mission of our partners in EECS. We look forward to collaborating with EECS on the new postdoctoral fellowship. Together we will establish this prestigious new program and cultivate the careers of the most talented electrical engineers.”
Jae Lim, who received bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from MIT, has been an EECS faculty member since 1978. He directs the Advanced Telecommunications Research Program in MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics. Last year, he received South Korea’s prestigious Ho-Am Prize for Engineering. A longtime benefactor of the Department, Lim has also founded endowed professorship funds and graduate fellowship funds, supporting EECS faculty and graduate students.
