Due to their excellent properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been regarded as one of the most potential materials for future applications in nanoelectronic devices. However, there is a huge gulf between production and applications. To meet the needs for applications, SWNTs’ diamemter, chirality, and metallic/ semiconducting property should be controlled in the growth process. We present herein a brief review on the controlled growth and fabrication of SWNTs array on surface in our group, including 1) Temperature mediated chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of SWNTs with controlled diameter; 2) Cap engineering for SWNTs growth with controlled chirality; 3) Direct growth of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube array; and 4) Separation of semiconducting and metallic SWNTs by assistance of “scotch tape”.
Professor Jin Zhang received his PhD from Peking University and Lanzhou University in 1997 and is currently on the faculty at Peking University. His research is on the controlled synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of carbon nano-materials, including: controlling the structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes by controlling the synthesis process; selective synthesis of metallic vs. semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes; Raman spectroscopic characterization of single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene; and the fabrication and applications of large arrays of carbon nanotubes. Dr. Zhang received the National Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2007 and 2nd grade of the State Natural Science Award in 2008 (2nd contributor).
