EECS professor to receive Distinguished Alumnus Award

EECS faculty member Srini Devadas has been named as a recipient of a 2019 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. The award, given in recognition of outstanding achievements, will be presented during IIT’s Institute Day in April.

Devadas is Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a principal investigator in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). An EECS faculty member since 1988, he also served as associate department head from 2005 to 2011.

Devadas has taught widely in EECS, lecturing classes in VLSI, discrete mathematics, computer architecture, algorithms, and software engineering. His research interests span computer-aided design (CAD), computer security, and computer architecture, and he has received major awards in each discipline. These include the IEEE/ACM A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation, the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award for inventing physical unclonable functions and single-chip secure processor architectures, and the IEEE W. Wallace McDowell Award for contributions to secure hardware.

His work on hardware information-flow tracking received the Most Influential Paper Award from the ACM International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS), and his papers on analytical cache modeling and the Aegis single-chip secure processor were included as influential papers in “25 Years of the International Conference on Supercomputing.”

He is a Fellow of both IEEE and ACM. He is also a MacVicar Faculty Fellow and a recipient of the Everett Moore Baker Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, considered MIT’s two highest undergraduate teaching honors.
