Although 6.170 will not be offered in its present form, we will have a set of 6.17* department lab subjects in the area of software available from Fall '08 onwards (pilot versions of these subjects may carry other numbers, but their role as "6.17*" subjects will be made clear when they are offered). For Fall '09 we will offer 6.197, Performance Engineering of Software Systems as a 6.17* CS lab.

In addition, 6.005 is available (instead of 6.17*) as a department software lab for the following two categories of students:

(a) students in the old curriculum (who will also earn 12 EDPs for 6.005, as for the 6.17* subjects);

(b) students *in transition* to the new curriculum, specifically students who took 6.001 and subsequently chose the new program; such students can use 6.001 to get credit for the 6.005 foundation class in the new curriculum, and can then take 6.005 itself as a department software lab.

Students proceeding entirely in the new curriculum, specifically the Class of 2011 and beyond, may take 6.005 as a foundation class. If they need or want to have their department lab subject be a software lab, it will have to be one of the 6.17* subjects, not 6.005.

The pilot versions of 6.17* subjects during the transition period will be structured so as to accept either 6.001 or 6.005 as a prereq, and thereby take in students from both the old and new curricula.
