EECS PhD graduate, June 5, 2009, Salil Desai

MIT EECS PhD graduate, Paul Hsu, June 5, 2009

Salil Desai: For my PhD, I worked on developing new fabrication technologies for biological microelectromechanical system (bioMEMS), designing new tools for characterizing bioMEMS and understanding the physiological impact of such systems. Now I am working on building miniaturized systems for cancer research at the Massachusetts General Hospital as a Fellow in Translation medicine.

Paul Hsu: My interests include speech and natural language processing and I am now working at Microsoft Research, Seattle, WA.

MIT EECS S.B. graduate Emily Hwang, June, 2009
MIT EECS S.B. graduate, Jenny Liu, June 2009

Emily Hwang
: I plan to enroll in the Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Science program (M.Eng) at MIT. First, I will be working at Next Jump as a Software Engineer.

Jenny Liu
: My intrests are in robotics, user interface, and bioelectrical engineering. I will be working at Microsoft after graduation as a program manager. I have always been interested in user interface design.

MIT EECS S.B. recipient, Bill Magnuson, June 2009
MIT EECS S.B. recipient, Vinayak Ranade, June 2009

Bill Magnuson: This summer I am interning for Google in Mountain View, CA. The work, supervised by Hal Abelson, aims to provide captivating tools to help educators and students access the world of mobile computing and programming. In Fall 09 I will pursue my Masters of Engineering degree at MIT in computer systems engineering.

Vinayak Ranade: As an EECS undergraduate, I completed a UROP with Prof. David Gifford in computational genomics and my 6.UAP with Prof. Seth Teller in robotic vision, and LA'd for 6.141, Robotics Science and Systems. I plan to return to EECS in the Fall, 2009, for my M.Eng. degree.

MIT EECS S.B. recipient Alex Rothberg, June 2009
MIT EECS Ph.D. recipient, Tara Sainath, June 2009

Alex Rothberg: I will be in Chicago next year working for GETCO, a trading firm. My interests are parallel computing on the GPU using CUDA. Of particular interest to me is implementing video encoding algrithms to run on the graphics hardware.

Tara Sainath: My field is speech recognition and my areas of interest include: machine learning, and signal processing. I plan to go to the speech research group at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, NY. I look forward to working on real-world challenging speech problems and continuing to improve human-computer interaction.

MIT EECS S.B. recipient Alex Schwendner, June 2009
MIT EECS PhD. recipient Riccardo Signorelli, June 2009

Alex Schwendner: For my MEng I am working with Saman Amarasinghe. My thesis is that functional programming can be used to simplify the semantics and implementation of distributed systems. This summer I am working with McKinsey & Company as a summer business analyst in their New Jersey office.

Riccardo Signorelli: Worked with EECS professors Joel Schindall and John Kassakian in the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems as a graduate student and research assistant to develop carbon nanotubes for building enhanced ultrapacitors. Founder of FastCAP Systems, in the environmental, energy industry, in January 2009.

MIT EECS PhD recipient Shawn Staker, June 2009
MIT EECS PhD recipient Sara Su, June 2009

Shawn Staker: My areas areas include statistical and mathematical modeling of financial systems. This summer I will start a full time position with Deutsche Bank in London. I hope to be part of the important restructuring of our global financial system. Needless to say, I'm excited to apply the quantitative skills I've gained during my PhD studies to projects outside the "laboratory".

Sara Su: I completed my PhD with Prof. Fredo Durand in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and plan to continue as a postdoc at MIT. I am passionate about computer graphics and user experience. My research goals are to understand computer users' workflows, needs, and pain points, and to build interactive visualization tools to help them be more productive and creative.

MIT EECS PhD recipient Naveen Verma, June 2009
MIT EECS S.B. recipient Xiao Xiao, June 2009

Naveen Verma: While at MIT, my research focus has been in ultra-low-power digital and analog integrated circuits with a special interest in biomedical applications. I will be joining the Electrical Engineering Department at Princeton as an Assistant Professor where I will continue working on low-power biomedical circuits and systems, ranging from neural interfaces to large-scale health-care networks.

Xiao Xiao
: My areas of interest include user interfaces and graphics. Next year, I will work toward my Masters degree in the Media Lab MAS Master's program. I will be in Prof. Hiroshi Ishii's Tangible Media Group.

MIT EECS S.B. recipient Helen You, June 2009
