MIT School of Engineering Distinguished Lecture Series 2009:

Inaugural Distinguished Lecture by Irwin Jacobs, (S.M. 1957, Ph.D. 1959)

Irwin Jacobs, educator, world-reknowned inventor and engineer, founder of Linkabit Corporation and Qualcomm, Inc. cofounder and Chairman, and philanthropist and leader in engineering outreach worldwide, delivered the MIT School of Engineering's inaugural distinguished lecture yesterday, Feb. 19, 2009. The lecture, sponsored by the MIT School of Engineering and the Microsystems Technology Laboratories, MTL, was opened by Dean of the School of Engineering Subra Suresh, followed by an introduction of Dr. Jacobs by MIT President Susan Hockfield.

In his talk, "From Information Theory Courses at MIT to Providing Chips and Technology for a World with Four Billion Cellular Subscribers: Memories and a Look Ahead," Irwin Jacobs shared reflections on his multifaceted career -- on his undergraduate studies at Cornell University succeeded by his masters and doctoral studies at MIT, to his insights on the future of digital technology following a career that included teaching at both MIT and the University of California, San Diego, founding and leading Linkabit Corporation (1969), conceiving and developing CDMA (code division multiple access) technology and forming Qualcomm (1985), growing throughout this time as an international leader in mobile satellite communications and digital wireless telephony. In difficult economic times, Dr. Jacobs' positive view of the future in terms of technology and its widespread use for the betterment of people's lives worldwide, was enthusiastically received by the near capacity crowd of engineering students, faculty and colleagues in MIT's room 10-250.
