CNN recently interviewed Tomas Palacios, Director of the MIT/MTL Center forf Grahene Devices and 2D Systems. Palacios, the Emmanuel E. Landsman Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, described graphene's unique properties enabling it to conduct electric currents faster than in any other known material. He also provides a view of the potential for graphene's use in the future. -
EECS professor Muriel Medard, principal investigator in the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) has teamed with EECS graduate student Ulric Ferner and Bell Labs researcher Emina Sojanin to develop a new technique to cut down on wasteful storage practices, especially of video content, in large data centers. Their work has been reported in the April issue of Technology Review. -
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department Head Anantha Chandrakasan announced on Jan. 21, 2013, the appointment of Professor Vladimir Bulovic to the Fariborz Maseeh Professorship in Emerging Technology. EECS researchers including professors Vladimir Bulovic, Jing Kong and Mildred Dresselhaus and postdoctoral associate Hyesung Park and graduate student Joel Jean have joined MIT colleagues including associate professor of materials science and engineering Silvija Gradecak and postdoctoral associate Sehoon Chang, to produce a new kind of flexible and solar cell based on graphene paired with nanowires and quantum dots. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has elected EECS professors Rodney Brooks and David Perreault to IEEE Fellow status. Professors Brooks and Perreault are among a class of 297 selected for the class of 2013 IEEE Fellows. -
Anantha Chandrakasan, EECS Department Head, and two of his students in the MIT Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) have joined a team of researchers from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) to show that a natural battery in the mammalian inner ear can power an implantable electronic device. This fall, the faculty and students in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department at MIT are coming together for a new program that has created a buzz since its announcement last spring. Anantha P. Chandrakasan, EECS Department Head and the Joseph F. and Nancy P. Keithley Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT has been selected as the winner of the 2013 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits. The citation for the award reads "For pioneering techniques in low-power digital and analog CMOS design." -

EECS Associate Professor and principal investigator in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab Li-Shiuan Peh, is part of a team that won best paper award at the Association for Computing Machinery MobiSys conference, for designing a smartphones network system that has the potential to reduce fuel consumption by 20 percent. -
