In conjunction with the appointment of current EECS Department Head Eric Grimson as MIT Chancellor (effective March 1), Dean of the MIT School of Engineering, Ian A. Waitz, informed members of the EECS community that Professor Srini Devadas, who has served as Associate Department Head in the EECS Department since October, 2005, will serve as Interim Department Head from March 1, 2011. Professor Duane Boning will continue as Associate Department Head.

An excerpt of Dean Waitz's February 23rd announcement message to the EECS community:

"Dear EECS Students, Staff, and Faculty:

As you know, last week President Susan Hockfield announced the appointment of Professor Eric Grimson as the next MIT Chancellor effective March 1, 2011. Professor Grimson has provided exceptional leadership to EECS in his six years as Department Head, and I know he will bring a similar level of leadership and excellence to the position of Chancellor. I am pleased to announce plans for interim leadership of EECS and the appointment of a Department Head Search Advisory Committee to help me choose the next EECS Department Head.

Professor Srini Devadas has agreed to serve as Interim Department Head effective March 1, 2011. Professor Duane Boning will continue as an Associate Department Head. I have worked with Professors Devadas and Boning on Engineering Council and I am confident they will provide effective and coordinated leadership during this transition period.

I am pleased to announce that Professor Leslie Kaelbling will chair the EECS Department Head Search Advisory Committee. The committee will begin its deliberations at once and will seek input from all of you. I have asked for the committee members to complete their deliberations by May 27, 2011, so that I can consider their input and make a decision shortly thereafter."
