Racing across the Australian outback powered by only the sun - an inside look at the electrical engineering challenges overcome by the MIT solar car team to finish 2nd in the 2009 World Solar Challenge's Silicon class.
Robert Pilawa
4:00 PM (refreshments served), Stata Center, Room 32-144
LEES Colloquium
-   This talk will address some of the challenges of solar car racing from an electrical engineering perspective, and how the electrical design is guided by the decisions made from a system perspective (mechanical and aerodynamics design, cost, safety, etc.). Building a winning solar car requires that all these various engineering disciplines come together in one design, and as such, solar car racing is truly an interdisciplinary team effort. This will be illustrated by showing some of the design innovations from MIT's latest solar car, Eleanor. She features a record-breaking Li-Ion battery back, as well as highly optimized, custom-made, peak power trackers that ensure that all the available energy is extracted from the 1.1 kW silicon solar cell array. A completely redesigned dashboard with diagnostics, on-board communications, cruise-control, and radio telemetry are all improvements from previous generations of MIT solar cars. Also provided will be some race highlights with photographs and detailed experimental data collected from our Darwin to Adelaide race. The talk is intended for a broad audience, and does not assume any previous knowledge in electrical engineering.
