Abstract
For 50 years we have held the discouraging belief that that almost all codes are "good" codes except for the the ones that we can think of. The invention of "Turbo Codes" has disproved this idea. Indeed these codes are wonderful in that they reliably transmit data over noisy channels at rates very close to capacity
The aim of this talk will be to convey the basic ideas of turbo codes to a nonspecialist audience. In particular, no previous knowledge of coding theory will be assumed.
Biography: Jack Keil Wolf is a member of the Center for Magnetic Recording Research and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSD. He is also a part-time employee of Qualcomm. His research interests are in coding and information theory.
