MTL VLSI Seminar
Abstract
I will first present 1000BASE-T, the physical layer of Gigabit Ethernet over copper. After an introduction to the overall Gigabit Ethernet standard, I’ll describe unshielded twisted pair (UTP) channel impairments, modulation and coding of 1000BASE-T, the clocking scheme and start-up protocol. Emphasis will be on the challenges in the monolithic VLSI implementation of the 1000BASE-T transceiver. In the second part of the seminar, I will present an overview of a joint project between Bell Labs research and Systimax cabling of Lucent, where we demonstrated a simplified version of the standard over Cat-6 cable.
