TR 1-2:30, 36-372
Prof. Hermann Haus, 36-351, x2585
3-0-9
Prereq: 6.014; 8.04 or 6.728 or 6.751

This class is based on a new manuscript that integrates the lecturer's 45 years of research on noise and fluctuation phenomena. Topics: review of electromagnetic field theory and an introduction into fiber optics; study of shot noise and thermal noise; noise performance of linear amplifiers; noise figure and noise measure; noise of quantum origin and the uncertainty principle; noise performance of linear optical amplifiers; bit error rates of long distance optical fiber transmission; soliton propagation on optical fibers; parametric amplification and the generation of squeezed states; optical quantum measurements.
