Senior Faculty Position in Communications:
A Joint Appointment in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics,
and
the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
February 9, 1998

The School of Engineering at MIT recognizes that there is a unique window of opportunity to influence the evolution of communication systems research and development, and to provide focus and leadership in the engineering of real-time aerospace information systems. To take advantage of this opportunity, MIT's historic commitment to research excellence in aerospace and in communications is being expanded through collaboration between the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

A key element in the establishment of this communications research initiative will be the appointment of a senior communications expert. This person's interests and experience should include some of the following areas: communication networks (aerospace, fiberline, wireless); interoperability issues; computer networking; applications of broadband technology; and human-computer interfaces. Not all of these areas must be known in depth, but the successful candidate must have strong research leadership skills, a strategic approach to competitive opportunities, excellent industry contacts, and be highly respected in his or her field. This will be a joint faculty appointment in the two departments, and the right individual could come from industry, government, or academia.

The appointment will be made as a full professor with tenure. This highly interdisciplinary research initiative will focus on the development of leading edge, integrated approaches to the design, implementation, and operation of complex, information-intensive communication systems as deployed in aircraft, spacecraft, hybrid networks and other types of communication infrastructure. Candidates must have a Ph.D., and be committed to both research and education.

All candidates should send a CV, and papers or technical reports, where appropriate. Please include citizenship and visa status if not a US citizen.

Send all applications to:

Prof. F. C. Hennie
Room 38-435
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, MA 02139
