Subject: Two Career Development Chair Appointments
I am pleased to tell you that two department faculty have recently received career development professorship appointments: Akintunde Akinwande will be the next ITT Professor, and Duane Boning has been awarded the Robert N. Noyce Career Development Professorship.
Tayo Akinwande is leading a research effort in vacuum microelectronics, with applications to flat-panel displays. His devices are made using processes similar to those used in semiconductor device fabrication. He is particularly concerned with resolution, luminous efficiency, brightness, drive voltage, reliability, and manufacturability. He joined the department in 1995 and has taught 6.012, 6.002, and 6.152J.
The ITT chair was established in 1981 by a gift from ITT, to provide support for promising young faculty members in our department. Previous chairholders have been Bert Halstead, Bill Dally, Tom Knight, Dave Gifford, Jesús del Alamo, Greg Wornell, and Duane Boning.
Duane Boning’s research area is semiconductor manufacturing, and his personal contributions have included the use of computation to support the simulation and control of semiconductor processes and equipment. He has taught 6.001 several times since joining the faculty in 1992, and lectured it in Fall 1996. He was promoted to Associate Professor last year. He held the ITT chair, which is now being awarded to Tayo Akinwande, for one year.
The Noyce chair was established in 1991, after Dr. Noyce’s death, in order to promote manufacturing, in particular the MIT Leaders for Manufacturing program. The previous chairholder was Professor Kevin Otto of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. There is a similar Noyce chair, established at the same time, awarded in the Sloan School of Management. The current holder of that chair is Professor Nelson Repenning; previously, it was held by Professor Rebecca M. Henderson.
