MW 8:30-10, E56-270ERBA emphasizes three methodologies-- decision analysis; cost-benefit analysis in the presence of uncertainty; and probabilistic risk assessment (PRA)--all of which pertain to decision making about large societal risks. In ERBA, the risks of particular interest are those associated with large engineering projects such as nuclear reactors, dams, large chemical plants, processes producing or using carcinogens, and arrangements for the transport and disposal of hazardous materials.

ERBA presents and interprets some of the many frameworks helpful for balancing risks and benefits in situations involving human safety, potential environmental effects, and large financial uncertainties. Although ERBA is application oriented, we want to help you develop a critical understanding of the assumptions, consequences, and analytic and practical limitations of the tools we present. We also try to provide perspective on the use of formal analysis in publicdecisions.
