During the talk, Dr. Barrett will examine some of the more complex integrated circuit devices in production and talk about the technical challenges of bringing such devices to market. Dr. Barrett's talk will also touch upon "Micro2010" (forecast for typical integrated circuit device in the year 2010); and, look at some of the key technology opportunities that will need to be addressed between now and 2010 with particular emphasis on the materials challenges. Finally, the talk will conclude with discussion of ways in which industry, government, and university can and should cooperate in order to continue to make advances in the future.

Information

This Lecture and Prize was established in 1991 and was endowed by the Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. It is awarded every two years to an individual who has contributed significantly to the advancement of processing of electronic materials, the understanding of their electronic behavior and its role in electronic applications. The Prize awarded is $5,000.

The selection of the awardee is made by a committee consisting of the heads of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a senior member of the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Previous Awardees:
