Subject: EVAT Final Report
As you perhaps know, an ad hoc committee was appointed in October 1994 to look into the educational uses of advanced technologies including, but not limited to, the World Wide Web. This was an MIT committee appointed at the direction of President Vest. I served as chair of this committee, which called itself the committee on Education Via Advanced Technologies, or EVAT. The committee had members from all five School at MIT, but our department was especially strongly represented.
The final report of the committee has now been released. Unlike most reports, it is not printed on paper; instead, it is a hypertext and hypermedia document on the Web. Its URL (uniform resource locator) is
http://www-evat.mit.edu/report/
You can access the report by using any of the popular Web browsers. In case you have not had experience using the Web before, do not despair. You can contact the MIT office that promotes and coordinates use of the Web for educational and administrative purposes. The coordinator is Suzana Lisanti, at ext. 3-0101. If you need assistance gaining access to the right hardware, software, and network connection to read the report, she is prepared to help.
If your computer is not networked, you can still read the report on it. Disks that contain the report are available from my office. We will also have printed copies of the report available through my office.
The opportunities offered by these technologies are very exciting, and will surely change the way we educate our students.
