Effective July 1, Tom Magnanti, the George Eastman Professor of Management Science, will hold a joint appointment in EECS. He has been on the faculty of the Sloan School since 1971, with a special interest in educational programs that combine management and engineering. He is co-director (along with Professor Richard C. Larson of our department) of the Operations Research Center. His most recent activity has been the development, with Ed Crawley, of the new Systems Design and Management program, run jointly by the School of Engineering and the Sloan School. He was a founding co-director of the Leaders for Manufacturing program. His undergraduate degree was in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University, and his Ph.D. from Stanford in Operations Research.
Tom is a past President of the Operations Research Society of America, and has been Editor-in-Chief of its journal Operations Research. He is the co-author of two textbooks, and dozens of research papers. He received the MIT Billard Award and the ORSA Kimball Medal for distinguished service and ORSA's Lanchester Prize for Best Annual Research Publication. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
As a joint member of the EECS department, Tom will be motivated to interact more with EECS people, and will be more visible to our students. He will also have a stronger base on which to continue his educational activities that bridge management and engineering.
