Subject: Teaching Awards -- Great News!

I am pleased to tell you that this year three members of the department are being honored for excellent teaching.

Al Oppenheim
Al will be this year's winner of the Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be presented at the Institute Awards Convocation, on Monday, May 13, at 3:30 PM in Room 10-250. I am sure Al would appreciate his departmental colleagues being there to see him get the award.

This award was established in 1989 by the School of Engineering to recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education by members of its faculty. It is presented annually and the winner is chosen from nominations that come from many departments. Prior winners from EECS include Al Drake in 1991, and the Hal Abelson - Gerry Sussman pair in 1992. Al Oppenheim's devotion to teaching has been recognized before; he won the IEEE Education Medal in 1988. A few years ago he wrote a thoughtful article for the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine expressing his personal views about education.

Greg Wornell
Greg is the first winner of the newly established Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be presented at the EECS Spring Party and Awards Presentation on May 19.

This award was established in 1995 to complement the original Bose Award by recognizing excellent contributions from the junior faculty of the School of Engineering. It is awarded annually, and the winner is chosen after consideration of junior faculty from many departments.

Steve Leeb
Steve has been selected as this year's winner of the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching in EECS. This award will be presented to Steve at the EECS Spring Party and Awards Presentation on May 19.

The Spira awards were established to acknowledge the tradition of high quality engineering education at MIT. The one in EECS has been awarded to junior faculty members. Previous winners have been Martha Gray in 1992, Greg Papadopoulos in 1993, Marty Schmidt in 1994, and Lynn Stein in 1995.
