Professor M. Frans Kaashoek appointed to Jamieson Career Development Professorship

Effective July 1, Professor Kaashoek will hold the Jamieson professorship. Frans came to MIT in January, 1993, after completing his doctorate at Vrije Universiteit, in the Netherlands. His area of expertise is computer systems, and his current research focusses on exokernels, a new operating system architecture that allows applications to safely extend the operating system for new functionality and better performance. He takes account of applications, systems, and hardware issues at the same time.

The Jamieson Career Development Professorship was established in 1992. The first chairholder was Professor Anant Agarwal. J. Burgess Jamieson, after whom the chair is named, is a member of the MIT class of 1952, and is currently a member of the department's visiting committee. He is active in the venture capital business.
