Title: Disk Drive Electronics

Denny Tang and Martin Chen
IBM Almaden Research Center
San Jose, California

With the introduction of magneto-resistive (MR) recording head, the density of magnetic disk is growing at about 60% per year. This growth drives up the recording data rate and demands faster electronics. This presentation will cover the work in the group of Electronics Integration at IBM Almaden Research Center. We will first discuss the cost/performance trade-offs between technology choices. Then we will describe our mixed-signal circuit design work for a partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection channel. A high speed analog-to-digital converter will be covered in details.
