RESOURCE DISCOVERY IN THE INTERNET
David Gifford
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Tools that help users discover what is in the Internet will be of
critical importance as we continue to experience an explosion in the
numbmer of servers and information services available world wide. We
have developed the first comprehensive server cataloging system that
provides a single point of access to over 400 Internet servers. This
"content routing" system provides both query refinement and query
forwarding services that help users construct meaningful requests, and
then peforms automatic result set merging from servers that contain
relevant information. We will discuss experience drawn from our
experimental Internet content routing system, and discuss what a
future electronic assisant might provide to help users navigate in
this ever increasing information space.
