July 7, 2005

"It is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Anantha P. Chandrakasan as the next chair holder of the Joseph F. & Nancy P. Keithley Professorship in Electrical Engineering, for a five year term from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2010. Anantha is a fitting choice for this Chair, based on his outstanding contributions in circuits and systems research, excellence in teaching and mentoring, and notable service to the department.

Professor Anantha P. Chandrakasan

Anantha's primary research interests include low-power digital integrated circuit design, wireless microsensor systems, ultra-wideband radios, and emerging technologies. He is co-author of the text Low Power Digital CMOS Design and Digital Integrated Circuits (2nd edition). He also co-edited Low Power CMOS Design and Design of High- Performance Microprocessor Circuits.

Anantha received the B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1989, 1990, and 1994 respectively. He joined the faculty at MIT in September 1994, and is currently an Associate Director of the MIT Microsystems Technology Labs. He has received numerous awards, including the IEEE Electron Devices Society's 1997 Paul Rappaport Award for the Best Paper in an EDS publication during 1997, and the 2004 DAC/ISSCC Student Design Contest Award. Anantha has served in leadership roles for key conferences, including as Program Chair for the 2003 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) and as Technical Program Co-chair for the 1997 International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED) and VLSI Design '98. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, where he serves as an elected member of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society AdCom and is the Meetings Committee Chair.

The Joseph F. & Nancy P. Keithly Chair was originally created as a career development chair, during which time it was held by Prof. Martin Schlecht, Prof. Hae-Seung Lee, and Prof. Martin Schmidt. In 1990 the Chair was enhanced to a senior faculty Professorship. From 1990 to 2005, the Chair has been held by Prof. Henry Smith. We are delighted that Anantha Chandrakasan is joining this esteemed group as the new Keithley Professor of Electrical Engineering."
