Durand will hold the Jamieson Career Development Professorship

June 27, 2005

Fredo Durand received a BS from Ecole Normale Superieure in 1994, an SM from INPG in 1995 and a Ph.D. from University J. Fourier in 1999. He joined the department in 2002.

Fredo’s research focuses on different aspects of computer graphics, especially computational photography, real-time rendering, and realistic rendering. A common theme to Fredo’s work is to use knowledge from the perception and visual art literatures, together with techniques from signal processing, computer vision and other domains, to generate not only more realistic, but also more "compelling" pictures. Fredo was recently named one of the first five Microsoft Faculty Fellows for his work in these areas.

Fredo is also a gifted teacher. In addition to contributions to the departmental core, Fredo has developed, with Jovan Popovic, a new Advanced Graphics course that amplifies departmental offerings in this area. Students particularly praise Fredo for his skill in providing intuitions behind the technical details, and in teaching students to understand and appreciate both the intuition and the technique.
