Dawson to hold the Carl Richard Soderberg Career Development Professorship of Power Engineering

June 27, 2005

Joel Dawson joined the EECS faculty in September, 2004. He received the S.B. and M.Eng. degrees in EE from MIT in 1996 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in EE from Stanford University in 2003. Joel will serve a three year term as the Carl Richard Soderberg Career Development Professor of Power Engineering; this chair was established in the School of Engineering in 1975 to honor Dr. Soderberg’s distinguished career at MIT as Institute Professor and Dean of Engineering.

Joel’s research is in the areas of analog circuits, nonlinear control, and in the engineering of large, highly integrated systems. Joel has investigated innovative techniques to improve the power dissipation and linearity of power amplifiers, a key component of wireless systems. A particular focus of his current research is in RF circuit design, directed toward the improvement of RF transceivers.

Joel is instrumental in teaching and development of undergraduate and graduate circuits subjects, including solid-state circuits and feedback systems classes (where he is described by students as “an awesome recitation instructor” and unusually effective at teaching students “how to solve problems both analytically and intuitively”), as well as a graduate high speed communications circuits subject.
