EECS AnnouncementAdalsteinsson will hold the Robert J. Shillman Career Development ProfessorshipJune 27, 2005
Elfar Adalsteinsson received a BS in 1989 from the University of Iceland Reykjavik, and the MS and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1991 and 1995, respectively, from Stanford University. From 1995 to 2004, Elfar was with the Lucas Center at Stanford. He joined MIT in 2004 with a dual appointment in EECS and MIT’s Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST), is a member of RLE, and is affiliated with the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging.
Elfar’s research area is medical imaging with magnetic resonance, focusing on optimal methods for acquisition, reconstruction and processing of in vivo imaging data. His interests include techniques for efficient sampling and spatial encoding of spectroscopic magnetic resonance data, whereby small signals, originating, for example, specifically from neurons in the brain, yield information not observed with conventional structural imaging. Applications of these and related methods include a study of the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and characterization of Multiple Sclerosis.
Elfar teaches in both HST and EECS. He has contributed to core undergraduate teaching, particularly in the signals and systems area, and is developing a new magnetic resonant imaging graduate subject. |
