EECS Announcement

Dresselhaus and Liskov named Recipients of 2004 Founders and von Neumann Medals by IEEE

November 25, 2003

Dear Member of the EECS Community,

Among THE most prestigious IEEE awards are the Founders Medal and the John von Neumann Medal. The Founders Medal recognizes, "outstanding contributions in the leadership, planning and administration of affairs of great value to the electrical and electronics engineering profession." The von Neumann medal recognizes, "outstanding achievements in computer-related science and technology."

It is with great pleasure that I write that this year both medals went to members of our faculty.

The Founders Medal went to Millie Dresselhaus. Millie was cited "For leadership across many fields of science and engineering through research and education, and for exceptional and unique contributions to the profession."

The John von Neumann Medal went to Barbara Liskov. Barbara was cited "For fundamental contributions to programming languages, programming methodology, and distributed systems."

I don't need to tell any of you how exceptional both of these people are. They are extraordinary researchers, educators, and colleagues.

Please join me in congratulating each of them on this significant recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments.

John Guttag EECS Department Head
