Professor Emeritus Peter Elias, former Department Head, dies

December 7, 2001

Professor Emeritus Peter Elias passed away this morning. He died peacefully in his own living room with his family at his side.

Peter was diagnosed in November as having Kreutzfeld-Jacob disease. His passing, therefore, was not a surprise. It is, nevertheless, a great loss for all of us here in the EECS Department. In addition to being a distinguished researcher and educator, Peter was one of MIT's great citizens. He will be sorely missed.

Peter's family will be holding a memorial service at 2pm on Saturday, December 15, at the American Academy of Arts and Science. The Academy is located on the Cambridge/Somerville town line. It's address is 200 Beacon Street, Somerville. Directions can be found at http://www.amacad.org/about/directions.htm.
