Prof. del Alamo wins Bose Award

May 14, 2002

I am delighted to inform you that Jesus del Alamo is the winner of the 2002 Bose Award. The Amar Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in 1989 by the MIT School of Engineering to recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education by members of its faculty. Jesus joins a distinguished list of Bose Award winners from EECS: Al Drake (1991), Hal Abelson and Gerry Sussman (1992), Al Oppenheim (1996), and Eric Grimson (2001).

Jesus has long been one of the Institute's great classroom teachers. He is renowned for his level of preparation and his ability to simultaneously excite and inform the students in the subjects he teaches. More recently, Jesus has become a leader in helping find ways to use technology to make our educational programs more effective. For example, his WebLab allows students to remotely test and probe devices. This has made it possible to bring a high quality "hands on" experience to several MIT subjects.

In many ways, Jesus is an exemplar of what an MIT faculty member should be. In addition to his teaching, Jesus is an extraordinarily accomplished researcher and a valuable citizen of his lab (MTL), department, and school. He is a role model worth emulating.

I take special pleasure in the fact that EECS faculty have won this prestigious award the last two years. It is a testimony to the value we all place on teaching.
