Abstract
The Engineering Systems Division was created in 1998. It has ties to most of the engineering departments, as well as to Sloan and other schools at MIT. All its faculty (currently numbering about thirty) are members of a department as well as the Division.
The Division is a culmination of nearly thirty years of history in the Engineering School. Originally the emphasis in the School of Engineering on issues related to ESD was on socio-technical systems, such as transportation and the environment. In the eighties a new emphasis on manufacturing was added. In the nineties the new emphasis was on large scale design. These interests led to the creation of several interdepartmental professional masters programs, such as the Technology and Policy Program, the Leaders for Manufacturing Program, and the System Design and Management Program.
The Division integrates all these interests and programs. Its goals include the elucidation of fundamental issues in large scale engineered systems such as complexity and flexibility, and the creation of an ESD PhD program with a set of core subjects. ESD hopes to influence the direction of engineering education in the departments. The areas of special interest to ESD in EECS include large scale software and communication systems.
