MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
EECS Announcement |
February 12, 2001
Michael Dertouzos has been named the first holder of the newly endowed TIBCO Founder's Chair.
Michael grew up in Athens, received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Arkansas (no kidding), and then his Ph.D. in 1964 from what was then MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering. He then joined our faculty, where he has been ever since. In 1974 he became Director of what is now the Laboratory for Computer Science. For over a quarter of a century, LCS has thrived under his leadership. Today, much of the Lab is working on Project Oxygen, a project rooted in Michael's determination to bring the benefits of computation and communication directly to people.
Michael has spent much of his career forecasting (usually accurately) and leading technological shifts. He is particularly well known for being perhaps the earliest advocate of what he dubbed the "information marketplace." He is the author of the books "What Will Be: How the New World of Information Will Change Our Lives," and the just published "The Unfinished Revolution: Making Computers Human-Centric."
Please join me in congratulating Michael on being named the first holder of this prestigious chair. It is yet another well-deserved honor in an illustrious career.
