The Electron and the Bit,
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, 1902-2002

We are pleased to offer the EECS Department 100th anniversary book, edited by former department head John Guttag. Originally undertaken in the fall of 2002 to prepare for the celebration of the Department's 100th anniversary in May, 2003, the 370-page book took nearly three years to complete. We believe that the wait was well worth it.

The history of the Department, skillfully related by Paul Penfield, sets the framework for a series of classic papers and appreciations for a number of distinguished members of the Department, giving the reader a genuine flavor for each era. Laboratory profiles provide unique perspectives of the department and each current EECS faculty member has contributed the abstract from his/her personally selected seminal paper with a brief (often classic) rationale. Finally, the book concludes with a complete list of all the degrees (ScD and PhD) that have been granted by the Department over the past 100 years!
